How Save Ukraine helps children heal from the trauma of war
When 9-year-old Olenka arrived at our Hope and Healing Center, she was terrified.
After spending a third of her life under occupation, every loud sound made her cover her head with her hands.
She barely spoke. Her first “conversations” with us were through drawings — simple lines, flowers, or sometimes chaotic strokes made with trembling hands.
The war had taken away the most precious thing she had — her mother, who was killed before her eyes. The occupation authorities were preparing to send Olenka to a Russian orphanage. The paperwork was almost ready.
Thankfully, our Save Ukraine team intervened in time. Olenka was rescued and safely brought back to Ukraine, where she now lives with her older sister. In our center, psychologists and art therapists are helping her rebuild trust, stability, and hope.
Just a month later, the change is visible. Olenka now plays with other children, speaks her first words again, and — most importantly — smiles.
At Save Ukraine, we know that healing takes time, but every smile is a victory over fear.
