World Telecommunication and Information Society Day
World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, celebrated annually on May 17th, was established by the United Nations to raise awareness about the role of telecommunications and information technologies in promoting sustainable development and improving people’s lives. The day marks the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 1865.
Telecommunication technologies, such as the internet, mobile phones, and satellites, have transformed societies by enabling global communication, enhancing education, providing access to information, and driving innovation. The day highlights the importance of ensuring that these technologies are accessible to everyone, especially in underserved communities, to bridge the digital divide and promote equal opportunities for all.
Each year, World Telecommunication and Information Society Day focuses on a specific theme that addresses current challenges in the field, such as cybersecurity, digital literacy, or expanding internet access. Events, discussions, and campaigns are organized globally to promote the development of telecommunication infrastructures and to ensure that information and communication technologies (ICTs) are used for the benefit of all people.
The day also emphasizes the role of ICTs in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by fostering economic growth, improving healthcare, and promoting inclusive societies.
