World Migratory Bird Day
World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD), celebrated biannually on the second Saturday of May and October, was established by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to raise awareness about the conservation of migratory birds and the importance of preserving the ecosystems they rely on during their long migrations. This global campaign highlights the significance of protecting migratory bird habitats, which are often threatened by human activities such as deforestation, urbanization, and climate change.
Migratory birds play a vital role in maintaining the balance of ecosystems, as they contribute to pollination, pest control, and seed dispersal. However, many species face challenges during their migration journeys, including habitat loss, pollution, and illegal hunting. World Migratory Bird Day advocates for stronger conservation efforts and international cooperation to safeguard the routes and habitats that are essential to these species’ survival.
Each year, WMBD focuses on a specific theme, such as preserving water habitats or addressing light pollution, which affects the navigation of migratory birds. On this day, governments, conservation organizations, and communities hold events such as bird-watching activities, educational programs, and clean-up campaigns to raise awareness about the need to protect migratory birds and their habitats.
World Migratory Bird Day serves as a reminder that the health of migratory bird populations is a key indicator of the overall health of the environment, and that preserving their habitats is critical for maintaining biodiversity.
