International Day of Plant Health
The International Day of Plant Health, celebrated annually on May 12th, was established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to raise global awareness about the importance of protecting plant health. Plants provide the foundation for life on Earth, supplying 80% of the food we eat and 98% of the oxygen we breathe. However, they are constantly threatened by pests, diseases, and environmental challenges such as climate change and pollution.
This day emphasizes the critical role that healthy plants play in sustaining ecosystems, agriculture, and food security. It also highlights the need for global cooperation to prevent the spread of plant pests and diseases, which can have devastating impacts on economies, livelihoods, and biodiversity.
Each year, the International Day of Plant Health focuses on promoting sustainable agricultural practices, strengthening plant protection measures, and encouraging research to enhance plant resilience. Governments, farmers, researchers, and organizations come together to discuss strategies for improving plant health and ensuring a safe, sustainable food supply for future generations.
