Human Rights Day
Human Rights Day, observed annually on December 10th, commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. The UDHR is a foundational document that outlines the fundamental rights and freedoms to which all people are entitled, regardless of race, nationality, gender, religion, or any other status. It serves as a common standard of achievement for all nations and has inspired many international human rights laws and treaties.
Human Rights Day is an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of human rights in building a fair, just, and peaceful world. It emphasizes the universal, indivisible, and inalienable nature of human rights, which must be protected and promoted by governments, institutions, and individuals alike.
Each year, Human Rights Day focuses on a specific theme, such as “Equality,” “Recover Better – Stand Up for Human Rights,” or “Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All.” Events, discussions, and educational programs are organized worldwide to raise awareness about human rights issues and to encourage action to protect and uphold these rights.
Human Rights Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle to ensure that all people, everywhere, can live in dignity, with their rights fully respected and protected.
