In one day, these people lost everything, or almost everything
In the pictures are families from the Kherson region, which recently received large humanitarian aid from the “Save Ukraine” team thanks to cooperation with our partner World Vision Ukraine Response.
In one day, these people lost everything, or almost everything, that they had earned during long years of hard work: house, property, animals, farms and gardens, items and toys of their children. Everything was taken away by the large water that gushed from the Kakhovka HPP destroyed by the russians.
We went on a mission to the Kherson region to support these families with 800 humanitarian aid kits: food, drinking water, hygiene products, water bottles, water purification tablets, etc. During the distribution, families shared their stories and painful memories with Save Ukraine volunteer and journalist Dmytro Lisovsky.
So, most Kherson residents absolutely didn’t expect such a large-scale flood after the news of the tragedy: some were going to sleep in the attic, some went about their business, following the news, and some even watered the vegetable garden. By the end of the day, the water in the homes of these families reached a level of 4 meters.
Elderly people say that even the occupation did not bring as much disaster to their villages as the disaster at the Kakhovka HPP. It hurts the most for the houses in which parents invested their strength and youth for the future of their children and grandchildren. And mothers cry over lost family albums, which have been saving pictures of their children’s first steps…
After we had heard the stories of the victims of the Kherson tragedy, we reassessed the importance of our mission with World Vision for these families. After all, it is not only about material support but also about the belief that they are not left alone with their grief.
We are happy that we were able to give people strength and hope to live on, despite all the losses.
